We have just finished one of the busiest weekends on the Balaklava calendar with the local Eisteddfod. I was privileged to be able to see our Choir and Vocal Ensemble perform on Friday and I was impressed not only by their musical performance but the way they conducted themselves as excellent ambassadors of Balaklava High School. The BHS Vocal Ensemble were also invited to perform at the finale concert on Sunday, as was Mitchell McLean in his ensemble ‘Wakefield Winds’ and a number of current and past BHS students again hit the stage with their performance in the High School Musical reprisal. There is much for us to be proud of at BHS and these students and their performances were perfect examples of our outstanding work in the area of performing arts. We also had a number of notable individual performances on Saturday, namely Abbey Bubner (vocal), Alex Bousfield (speech and drama), Leyla Jacobson (piano), Paige Bubner and Olivia Allen (vocal ensemble) and Blade Williams (speech and drama). There is a report and some photos further in this newsletter and I encourage you to attend some of the performances at next year’s Balaklava Eisteddfod if at all possible as you won’t be disappointed.
Japanese Welcome
Balaklava and Meidei Schools have had a long standing arrangement where adventurous students from Japan join us at Balaklava High School for a two week cultural exchange, which has occurred for nearly 20 years now. Last week we had a formal assembly to welcome our 10 visitors who will have the opportunity to experience many aspects of our daily lives and come to understand some parts of what it means to study and live in Australia.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the host students, Ashlee and Bella-Rose Allegretto, Maddie Karklins, Brooke Michalanney, Alex Bousfield, Tylah Arthur, Casey Pratt, Jack May, Jacob Battle, Jack Heaslip and Tom Michael and their families for inviting these students into their homes and providing care and Australian experiences for them. These visits provide an opportunity to build lifelong friendships and the possibility of perhaps having a return visit to Japan in the future as a number of our former hosts have done.
STEM Building Opening
On Friday 26th July we had the official opening of our STEM building with a number of dignitaries in attendance, including the Hon. Geoff Brock MP who did the official opening, Mayor Rodney Reid and Governing Council Chairperson Andrew Parker. Before the formal speeches and official unveiling of the plaque, our school choir performed a high energy version of Aladdin’s Never Had a Friend Like Me, which had the audience feeling good and we were then impressed by Aboriginal student, Jasmine Barden’s delivery of the Welcome to Country in Kaurna. Finally, a tour of the facilities provided the official party with a view of how these state-of-the-art facilities are being used to extend our students’ knowledge and understanding and skills in the areas of Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Restorative Practices
On Friday, our first groups of students undertook training in the Restorative Practices program, which will help them improve their skills in developing and maintaining relationships and build their ability to resolve conflict peacefully. Please ask your child about the training session, what they learnt on the day and how it is being implemented in their classes. We will have one further training session for students on Thursday 5th September and we will also offer an evening session for parents at 5 pm on this night. This will give parents an opportunity to learn how restorative practices uses questions which encourage self-reflection, create a space to be heard and challenge negative behaviour with regards to its impact on others. This process cultivates the capacity to build and maintain significant relationships in the home, at school and in the community. A separate letter about this will go home to families in the next few weeks, however, if you would like more information about this program now, please contact me at the school and I will be happy to discuss it.
Staffing News
We have been very pleased to welcome Sarah Mayer to BHS for Semester 2. Sarah has filled our Home Economics vacancy and has settled in well with her classes from Years 8-12. We are also pleased to welcome a number of pre-service teachers this term and we are grateful to our experienced staff members who have agreed to mentor these student teachers and our students who are accepting of new teachers.
Change of Date for a Student Free Day
Last term I advertised a list of this year’s Student Free and School Closure Days, however there has now been a change to one of these dates. To allow staff to undertake a joint moderation day with Riverton and District High School, we will now have a Student Free Day on Tuesday 20th August, not Friday 23rd August as previously stated. Please make this change in your diaries.
Other dates of note this term are:
Week 7 Monday 2nd September – Student Free Day for work on our Site Improvement Plan
Week 10 Wednesday 25th September – School Closure Day for Paskeville Field Days
School Uniform
Yet another reminder about the importance of wearing uniform. Now that it’s cooler, we are seeing lots of colours and items of clothing in the schoolyard which do not meet our agreed school uniform expectations. If meeting these expectations is a concern for families, I ask them to contact the relevant year level coordinator to discuss this.
Students are expected to wear a navy or white school polo top, navy bomber jacket, navy rugby top or plain navy hoodie, all of which are available for purchase from TADS in Balaklava. Shorts and trousers are to be navy or grey and trackpants are to be navy with no stripes or large logos. Families are reminded that black pants and tops are not part of our uniform and leggings, jeggings and jeans are also not acceptable for school.
As always, I encourage parents to contact me at the school with any issues or concerns or if you would like to discuss any aspect of your child’s learning. I can also be contacted at the school via Daymap, email Sonia.Pringle235@schools.sa.edu.au or phone 8862 0600 where you can speak to me directly or make a time to come and see me.

Eisteddfod Congratulations!
Thank you and congratulations to all the students involved in the Eisteddfod last Friday and on the weekend. You all represented our school with pride and Choir and Vocal Ensemble performed beautifully. The students who helped at various venues throughout the event were greatly appreciated by the convenors. Mr Szular's physics class who helped set up on Thursday afternoon were apparently the fastest set up team they have ever had! Well done and thank you.
Congratulations to the following students who competed individually over the weekend:
Blade Williams - Speech and Drama
Abbey Bubner - Vocal Scholarship - Runner-up, Musical Theatre solo - 2nd Place, Classical Vocal Solo - Honourable Mention.
Alex Bousfield - Speech and Drama - 1st place
Paige Bubner and Olivia Allen - small Vocal Ensemble - Honourable Mention
Our Vocal Ensemble (Sarah-Ann Sanders, Leyla Jacobson, Ella Taylor, Alice McArdle, Paige Bubner, Abbey Bubner) also performed at the Finale Concert on Sunday and Mitchell McLean performed with his Wind Ensemble, both groups performed beautifully. Many of our students performed in the awesome ‘High School Musical’ item at the Finale Concert too – well done Alex Bousfield, Abbey Bubner, Paige Bubner, Tyler Durdin, Charlie Evans, Maddie Gorman, Sophie Hamdorf. Mitchell McLean also volunteered his time at venues throughout the weekend setting up, operating sound and lights.
Thank you to all of you for your hard work and preparation and representing Balaklava High School with excellence.
Thanks also to all the staff who helped out or supported our students throughout the weekend, especially Suri Umapathysivam and Cerys Harris-Howson for supporting students on the Friday and Suri’s awesome conducting on the Friday and Sunday. We were delighted to have the support of Principal Sonia Pringle attending each of our performances on the Friday and Sunday too. Thank you!

Thank you from the President of the Balaklava Eisteddfod Society
On behalf of the Balaklava Eisteddfod I would like to pass on my very grateful thanks to all who helped in anyway over the Eisteddfod weekend such as allowing us the use of the beautiful Performing Arts Centre, lending us equipment and the students who worked all day Friday. The teachers from the visiting schools were so grateful for their quick thinking and actions to do set ups in record times. They are the reason our competition keeps on time all day. We also had some students helping on Saturday announcing, working in the Eisteddfod office and behind the scenes.
To the music teachers, Melanie and Suri and their music students, you must be so proud as the students looked amazing, performed so well and are a credit to your school. Thank you to the Vocal Ensemble who performed as guests artists on Sunday at the Finale Concert; they were just delightful.
To all students who took part in the Eisteddfod, well done and an extra congratulations to Abbey Bubner who was a worthy Runner up in the AMVC Vocal Scholarship.
Thank you also for your welcoming message on your magnificent electronic noticeboard, welcoming visitors to Balaklava Eisteddfod and wishing competitors well. It made me feel so proud to be a part of the Balaklava Community and was noticed by many, many people. Thank you all again for your contribution to the 2019 Balaklava Eisteddfod.
Kind Regards

Restorative Practices:
- Helps students and adults learn about perspectives.
- Helps to build empathy and understanding.
- Provides people with the opportunity to repair harm by acknowledging their wrongdoing, expressing remorse, and taking action based upon the victim’s needs to repair trust.
- Allows victims to share their experience, offer forgiveness, and make amends.
Having a chance to understand human connection helps to rebuild relationships, foster empathy, and helps the whole community to feel safe and more connected.
Come and join us in moving toward a safer and more connected community with the Director of Restorative Journeys. We will learn strategies to help us strengthen relationships across all areas.
A free sausage sizzle will be provided and you will have the chance to win cash prizes
Can’t get there? Please contact us so we can arrange transport.
On the 5th of August BCCC, BPS and BHS joined together for the 2019 Reconciliation Event called ‘Let’s Learn, Share, Grow’. As the name suggests the day involved learning about the history of Aboriginal people, sharing new and old stories and skills, and growing as a community in pursuit of the reconciliation agenda.
Jasmine Barden and James Wanganeen provided us with a special Welcome to Country. James stayed to play the didgeridoo for the younger students. Talk-kin-Jeri demonstrated a variety of traditional dances which was much appreciated by all.
A massive thank you the students who helped face paint, the World Challenge team for cooking the BBQ, and a special thank you to Ryan Bernhardt who was our musical talent for the day.

In Term Two 8PG1 participated in the Cows Create Careers program. For three weeks, teams of students cared for two calves from the Zweck family's dairy farm at Blyth and built their understanding of calf health, the dairy industry and potential careers in dairy. To conclude the program, they attended the presentation day at Kapunda on June 26th with students from 13 other schools. Team TECK - Kashaya Carpenter, Ella Standley, Tamzyn Dos Santos and Casey Pratt were the winning Junior team for the Mid-North and Barossa region with an amazing score of 96.5% for their assessment work. Maddison Poole was recognised with a nomination in the Jeff Kernich Encouragement Award which acknowledged her enthusiasm and dedication to the care of the calves, including volunteering to feed on the weekends.
Photos show Team TECK, Maddison Poole with the other nominees and Ella Standley and Sophie Hamdorf getting in to some of the fun activities at the Presentation Day.

Life after BHS for Jane Harding
After graduating from BHS in 2009 I took a gap year before moving to Adelaide to study a Bachelor of Pharmacy at the University of South Australia. After graduating with Honours in 2015 (and taking a relaxing holiday overseas!!) I was keen to get back to the country and moved to Port Pirie to complete my Pharmacy Internship at the Port Pirie Hospital. I then continued in Port Pirie for a further 4 years before accepting a Pharmacy Residency Position which has involved working at the Lyell McEwin Hospital and Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Current job role: I am currently working at the Royal Adelaide Hospital as a Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Palliative Care Pharmacist.
Highlights of your current job/career: Undertaking the SA Pharmacy Residency Program which has provided the opportunity to work in a range of hospitals, different clinical settings and contribute to pharmacy research. But mostly having those ‘feel good’ moments when I am able to positively impact a patient’s health journey.
Looking back on your time at BHS, did BHS help with your career pathway? If so how?
Absolutely! I had very motivating and engaging teachers who mentored me throughout high school. BHS provided me with a diverse range of opportunities being academic, sporting and social which allowed me to explore a variety of different pathways and keep my options open until I knew which direction I wanted to head in.
This year, Mr Brooks has been working with selected Year 10 male students around the themes of behaviour growth, empathy, personal identity, relationships, future planning, gratitude and mindset. These themes are explored through physical activity, group dynamics and community endeavours. The current project for the boys is to pave the carpark for the Balaklava Child Care Centre to ensure safety for parents, children and workers. This project is led by Josh Oliver, the groundsperson at Balaklava Community Children's Centre. As the boys have learnt through theory lessons, community involvement can improve and illicit positive emotions, engagement and purpose within our lives. See photos below stage 1 of the BCCC carpark re-development.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)
All schools are required to collect information about the numbers of students that they provide adjustments to under the Disability Discrimination Act (1992) and Disability Standards of Education (2005). This data will be used as the basis for national funding.
The NCCD involves the collection of:
- the number of students receiving adjustments to enable them to participate in education on the same basis as other students
- the level of adjustment provided to students
- student’s type of disability, if known
Under the model, the definition of disability is broad and includes learning difficulties, health and mental health conditions.
If your child is identified for inclusion in the Collection, the required information will be included in this year’s data collection.
If you have any questions about the data collection, please contact Lucy Thiel on 8862 0600. Further information can be found at: http://www.education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-collection-data-school-students-disability.
