OPEN BASKETBALL STATE FINALS
Balak Boys reign supreme!
Congratulations to our Open Boys Dream Team for winning the School Sport Division 3 State Grand Final!

After a few close games early on, the boys went in to finals undefeated and managed to steam roll their way into the big dance against Mt Barker. At half time, the game was dead even and things were getting tough but then the lads turned on beast mode and started cooking.
By the end, we got the job done with a convincing win that was built on team defence and absolutely selfless play. Every one contributed to the 5 wins and played a significant role which was fantastic. A special bunch of young men who got exactly what they deserved. Reward for effort!
Thanks to Coach Parsons and Team Trainer Tess Rana.
Our girls team also played off in the State Finals and finished 3rd. They started their day with a solid win against Mt Barker. A slow start in their second game against Xavier, the eventual winners, meant they had to fight back hard in the last quarter to try and claw back the game and ended up going down by 8 points. They continued their good form into the final game with a competitive first quarter against Ocean View, but the opposition proved too strong sinking many 3 point shots to take the win. The girls didn’t stop battling and continued to represent BHS with pride!
Thanks to our coach Mr Noack and Ms Cotgrove for scoring.

Thursday, 8th of August saw the Year 11/12 Girls Netball Team head to Kadina for Round 2 to play against St Marks and Kadina. The girls had the bye first up, which allowed them to check out the competition. The girls were a bit slow to get going in Game 1 so Kadina got a bit of a run on and were up by 7 at the first break. To the girls credit, and with a few key changes to the regular line up, they clawed their way back to win by 5 in the end.

The girls started slow again against St Marks in Game 2 and were down at the first break again but came back to be 3 up at the last change. Unfortunately, the girls had run out of steam and a few silly, forced errors saw us go down by 4 goals in the end.

Excellent defence and team play all day with everyone on the team having moments of brilliance at some point in the two games.

Thanks to Ruth Stevens for umpiring and Matilda W for coming and scoring.

Year 7/8 Boys Football
On Friday 9th August, our Year 7/8 Boys Football team went head to head against Xavier College at Ralli Park, Balaklava in the first round of the Knockout Football competition.
After a tough selection process, coach Friedrichs was happy with the 24 man squad chosen to represent BHS.
The boys had a fast start out of the blocks to kick the opening goal in the first minute of the game. Xavier wrestled back control after the five minute mark and peppered away at the goals for the majority of the quarter but could only manage one goal. A late goal in the first quarter saw BHS take a slight lead at quarter time.
The second quarter was an arm wrestle with both teams trading goals but failing to capitalise on the swings in momentum. BHS again took a narrow lead into half time.
Coach Friedrichs asked for a change to the game plan in the third quarter which took some time to adjust to, however, eventually BHS started to dominate forward entries to have six scoring shots to one. Unfortunately, BHS kept Xavier in the game with inaccurate kicking an only one major.
After Xavier kicked the opening goal of the fourth quarter, the BHS boys hit their straps to pile on four quick goals and dominating possessions. This seized control of the game and put the result out of question for the opposition. Two late goals from Xavier in the last three minutes clawed back the margin to 16 points.
Final Score
BHS 9.11.65
Xavier 7.7.49
Best Players: Henry E, Charley W, Riley M, Brock H, Elliot S, Josh H, Lachy M, Archer R, Dylan I
Thanks to Mr Friedrichs for coaching, Mr LaGrutta for waving the flags behind the goals, Seb and Dylan for their excellent umpiring, Matthew for running, Kerry M for timing, Will H for strapping and running water, parents for supporting and the BFNC for the use of their facilities, especially the scoreboard!

Year 7/8 Knockout Football Semi Final

On Wednesday, our Year 7/8 Boys Football team went head-to-head against Clare High School and Saint Francis of Assisi at Clare Town Oval.

Our first game against Clare High School was a fast-paced contest. CHS got the jump on our boys in the first 10 minutes scoring two quick goals and having plenty of entry into their forward line. BHS was able to sneak a goal before the end of the first half to keep in the game. The second half was an even contest with BHS having plenty of opportunities but couldn’t convert on the scoreboard. In the end, CHS were too good and ran away winners by three goals.

It was a quick turn around for our second game against Saint Francis of Assisi. It was evident that Saint Francis were fresh and raring to go with three quick goals in the first 10 minutes. Again, BHS had multiple chances to apply some scoreboard pressure but couldn’t convert their goals. Saint Francis’ bigger bodies and fresh legs were too much for BHS to handle, running away winners by six goals.

Congratulations to our Year 7/8 Knockout Football team who gave it their all and represented the school with PRIDE.

Thanks to Mr Friedrichs for coaching, Mr Noack for driving the bus and umpiring, Seb H and Dylan M for running and supporting the team, Michael M for goal umpiring and supporting and all of the parents who came along to support their child.
